The chips are retained in the flutes during use. Three-fluted taps have the greatest chip-holding capacity and should be used, in the size range where available, for tapping holes deeper than 1-1/2 diameters. Each of the taps feature American National thread forms, and each has its own chamfer style:  Taper – 7 to 10 threads, Plug – 3 to 5, Bottoming – 1 to 2.
